Class XII Chemistry Project.
How to detect the Adulterate present in food stuff?
Detection of Adulteration
in common food stuff.
1.Detection of Starch in Milk
Experiment |
Observation |
Infs. |
Little sample of Milk is taken in a test tube, in which one drop of
Iodine solution is added. |
Appearance of Blue colors |
Starch Present |
2.Detection of Mineral oil or facts: -
Experiment |
Observation |
Infs |
Little sample of clear oil is
taken in which three times of its Volm of KOH Sol. is
added. Boil in a water bath until the liquid becomes transparent. Cool and
then a test tube of clear water is added. |
If turbidity appears |
Mineral oil present |
3.Detection of Yellow dye in
turmeric powder.
Experiment |
Observation |
Infs |
Take 1g of turmeric powder in a
test tube in which 5ml cone HC1 is added and shaken well and then add 1ml of
diphenyl Carbazide Soln. |
Appearance of pink red color |
Lead chromate present |
4.Detection of Vanaspati in pure ghee or butter.
Experiment |
Observation |
Infs |
1 teaspoon of melted ghee is taken
in a test tube, in which 5ml of cone HC1 and 8-10 drop of 2% Sol. of furfural
aldehyde and shaken vigorously for 2-3 minutes. |
Appearance of pink or red color
in the lower acid layer. |
Vanaspati present |
5. Detection of yellow dye in turmeric powder
Experiment |
Observation |
Infs |
Little turmeric powder is taken on
watch glass and a few drops of Cone. HCl is added to moisten the mass
and wait for some time. |
The mass becomes pink color then
add little water, the pink colour will uniformly spread |
Presence of yellow dye (Methanol
yellow) is confirmed |
6 Detection of argemone
oil in Edible Oil
Experiment |
Observation |
Infs |
Add few drops of Cone. NHO3
to small amount of oil in a test tube and shake well |
No red color |
Presence of argemone oil is confirmed |
7. Detection brick powder in
chilli powder
Experiment |
Observation |
Infs |
Little amount of Red chilli powder
is taken in a glass jar then added water to it. |
Precipitate of brick powder settles
down in the bottom of the glass jar and chilli powder floated |
Presence of brick powder is
confirmed |
